Columbia University VCO

Prof. Peter Kinget of Columbia University has been using EMX to design complex circuits This example is from a CICC '05 paper which studies the the impact of metal fill in an inductor and extends the analysis to designing full VCOs using integrated inductors and MOM capacitors. The photo shows two VCOs; the VCO OUT is a standard design, while VCO IN has the MOM capacitor under the inductor to save space. The measured phase noise for the two VCOs is almost identical while the VCO IN consumes 47% less area. EMX was used to simulate the combined circuit.
